Merry Christmas

Whatever the weather, this is a time for family and friends and not gardening. We can forget about the garden for a few days and it will not come to any harm.

If the weather is cold and frosty or foggy or damp, we can enjoy the garden from the warmth of the home.

But if you want to escape the noise and frivolities for a moment, there are a few reasons to get out. We mustn’t forget to feed the birds so keep the feeders topped up. And water is just as essential for the birds too so make sure birdbaths are refilled or thawed in frosty weather. Wild birds will enjoy a bit of Christmas cake, cheese, bacon fat or scrappy bits of turkey too.

Make sure there is a hole melted in the ice on ponds too – but don’t bang it to crack it.

If you have a greenhouse that is heated then check the heater regularly to make sure it is working. Tomorrow is a popular time to sow onions in the greenhouse if you want to grow giants, but for most of use we can leave it till March.

Don’t forget to water and look after your Christmas pot plants too. But most of all, have a lovely time and we wish you all a happy festive season and look forward to a great gardening year in 2023 and to see you at Nags Hall.
